I don’t think a lack of money or time has anything to do with this problem. We have to care more for those around us and that isn’t a policy problem, it’s a human problem. I do think we need to talk about and try to understand why our communal connections have become less pervasive. More urbanism? Our cultural embrace of individualism? Our tolerance of differences? As I wrote above, all of these things are mostly wonderful. They also come with costs that we would mostly prefer to ignore.
